Ebrahim Rahbari, Head of Rates Strategy at Absolute Strategy Research, was recently invited to share his insights on the Bloomberg Surveillance podcast, hosted by Tom Keene and Paul Sweeney.
In a wide-ranging conversation (from 14:00 to 27:08 in the recording), Ebrahim discussed what he calls the “tale of two stories” in the American balance sheet—a robust private sector balance sheet behind which the public sector has hidden, raising concerns about potential major challenges in the coming years.
He shared why a near-term Fed rate cut appears reasonable given clearer signs of economic slowing in housing and the labour market, and offered views on recession risks, inflation dynamics, and the prospects for a soft landing. Ebrahim also explored how the Fed might benefit from executing a single, “surgical” rate cut without committing to a longer-term easing path, noting recent shifts in the Fed’s communication style.
Other highlights included discussion of the roughly 10% decline in the Bloomberg Dollar Index from its peak, why Ebrahim believes the 13-year strong-dollar trend has reached an inflection point, and how global fiscal dynamics are evolving as US exceptionalism fades.
